Props in our children's film

Black hat: Zeddicus's wizard hat - made by Bronte
Grey hat: Gwenofyn's wizard hat - made by Tom
Stars made by: Jess
Moons made by: Bronte
Zeddicus's wand to indicate the idea of magical powers - made by Jess and Bronte

Today we focused on the editing part of the assignment , using final cut express. Tom, Bronte and Jess did the editing and updated the blog, whilst Lewis started work on the garage band sound track which we will convert over to final cut to complete our task.

this is an image of the props that we used in our task - we used these to add characterization to the wizards, we feel that this is a vital part of the production as it makes the children more interested as they have some thing different to concentrate on, instead of just watching normal people...

Filming schedule

We started filming our opening sequence yesterday, with the intention of filming 1 minutes worth of the whole piece in one lesson and another minute in the next lesson. However, we managed to film everything we needed in the first lesson. We started filming our ending first as this part took place outside and as it wasn't raining, we took this as an opportunity to film the outside part incase it did rain later. We will hopefull upload our work next lesson and begin to edit on final cut and add music on garage band.

Analysis of a credit sequence of Monsters inc.

The way that 'Monsters inc' has began its film is by opening with the credits. This method of displaying the credits is really effectively done. It immediately has an upbeat and lively jazz soundtrack which is engaging, whilst showing the logos of Walt Disney, and pixar animations - children can already identify that the film is going to be appealing as Disney are one of the leading children's film creators. The credits plays a significant role by revealing to the audience the themes going to be included in the film by displaying images of doors, monsters etc. The use of sound, especially the roars/screams of monsters sets the scene of monsters which is important to establish to a young audience straightaway, which is something that we can use in our work.

Visually, the overall atmosphere that has been created is a very lively, energetic scene that is exciting. Similarly to the sound, the images have the same affect of being lively and colourful. The audience can see a variety of bold and bright colours which would be appealing to children. The pace of the credits is fast moving which keeps the audience interested and entertained the whole way through which is important and what the audience can see is always changing which doesn't bore people. Lastly, the way the credits have been presented does a lot to guide the audience and allows them to get a idea of what to expect from the film, making it very important to do well.

Time Line

This is our time line for our childrens film opening sequence. It includes what's going to happening for the first 1 minute 20 odd seconds. So far we couldnt make our childrens film sequence last 2 minutes but the timeings are just rough so it may last longer than we've mapped out.

Analysis of music in an opening of a fantasy

We looked at the opening sequence of Narnia as it a fantasy film. From the very beginning there is a dramatic, upbeat element to the music and immediately draws the attention of the audience. This instantly sets the energetic motion of the scene. It also represents the characters by displaying their feelings by showing their fear. As the action starts to fade down, so does the music which gives and indication of what is going to happen next, as well as allowing the audience to hear the dialogue more easily.

The non-diegetic sound is very action-themed but includes a fantasy element which has added in to relate to the genre of the film. As the film is aimed at a child audience the music used is helping the audience understand and identify with the emotion and feeling that will assist them into understanding more. The music is used very straightforwardly as the movements of the camera shots and the characters cooperates with the sound.

Additionally, there is a lot of use of diegetic sound to emphasise the motions of the action that is happening. It has a slight exaggeration to build tension and intensify the opening scene. Overall, the vivid use of music brings the opening scene together to engage and interest the audience, allowing them to understand the dramatic and upbeat beginning that will set the scene for the remainder of the film.
